Nothing is like it has been before.
The unknown way lies before them.
Darkkness? Despair? Loneliness? Suspicion?
They don’t know it, are afraid of the uncertainty, of that what might come.
And still there is encouragement, presence, being held.
You Abram on your uncertain way – don’t be afraid!
You old Jacob who you move to Egypt – don’t be afraid!
You widow who you were baking bread for Elijah – don’t be afraid!
You young Jeremiah – don’t be afraid!
You Zachary who you were praying for a child – don’t be afraid!
You Mary facing the angel – don’t be afraid!
You shepherds in the fields – don’t be afraid!
You Peter fisher of men – don’t be afraid!
You Jairus with your care for your ill daughter – don’t be afraid!
You men on the ship in the storm – don’t be afraid!
You women facing the empty tomb – don’t be afraid!
Immediately in an uncertain situation
“Don’t be afraid”.
May the way be ever so stony, ever so dark, ever so uncertain –
Somebody is here.
Somebody who bears the darkness, the uncertainty, the fear with us.
Somebody who accompanies us.
Somebody who bears us.
Fear not, for I have called thee by thy name.
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee.
When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt;
Neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
Fear not, for I am with thee. (Isaiah 43)
